As he greeted the Spanish-speaking pilgrims present in St Peter’s Square during his Wednesday general audience, Pope Francis referred to the “terrible earthquake” in Mexico that “caused numerous victims and material damage”. “In this moment of suffering – Pope Francis continued during his audience today – I want to express my closeness and prayers to the entire Mexican population”. The Pope then shared in the grief of the families of the victims, expressing his gratitude to “the rescue teams” and those who assist the wounded and those who have lost everything. Finally, Pope Francis entrusted the “dear Mexican nation” to the protection of Our Lady of Guadalupe.
