(London) Cardinal Vincent Nichols, Catholic primate of England and Wales, has welcomed the news of the completion of the canonization process of Blessed John Henry Newman. The rite of canonization presided over by Pope Francis in the Vatican will be held on 13 October. The Archbishop of Westminster speaks of “great pride” for this new English Saint and says he has thought of Card. Newman during the Mass he celebrated for the clergy of England and Wales on the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus last Friday. “John Henry Newman is known for many great qualities”, Card. Nichols said, “but we remember him particularly for the kindness and compassion of his ministry to the people of Birmingham. At his death, thousands of people participated in “his funeral procession from Birmingham to Rednal”.
